The first month of the project was probably the easiest, but also the most amazing. We delved into familiar and unfamiliar tunes to find the most precise music express for the characters in our film. It was an exciting journey into a musical world and a musical language that we didn’t even always understand, but it fascinated us.
Diary 2 (November)
This was the second month of the project. We continued to select Belarusian and Jewish tunes for our silent film, but also started a teaching module.
Diary 3 (December)
The most emotionally difficult month of the project. Conflicts of arguments at every meeting. Sheet music, audio recording, klezmer tutor, filmmaker, cinema – all of them demand something and prove that they are right. What should musicians do? Arguing and looking for the most successful way to the melody.
Diary 4 (January)
A month of hard work with subtle things like mood tones and melodies. In order not to lose the essence and origin of the tune, to stay within the genre, but to match the sence of the scene or character.
Diary 5 (February – March)
The last part of the project is about creating miracles before and during the recording of the soundtrack. The talk is about “magical” sound effects, and about the atmosphere that must float in the silent movie, enlivening the picture.
